What is appendicitis?
The appendix is a small pouch attached to the large intestine. When it becomes blocked and inflamed it can swell and, if untreated, burst, which is dangerous. Early diagnosis makes treatment safer and recovery easier.
Warning signs
- Pain starting around the belly button and moving to the lower right side
- Loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting
- Low fever
- Pain that worsens with walking, coughing or pressing
- Abdominal swelling or severe pain (go to a hospital immediately)
Diagnosis and treatment
We examine you, and may advise blood tests and an ultrasound or scan. Appendicitis is usually treated by removing the appendix, most often by laparoscopic surgery with small cuts. Some mild cases may be managed differently, depending on the findings.
