Sebaceous cysts, lipomas and other swellings are among the most common lumps under the skin. Dr. K. Praveen Reddy examines every swelling, advises tests if needed and removes sebaceous cysts and lipomas as a short day-care procedure. For swelling of the scrotum, see hydrocele surgery.
A new lump under the skin is worrying, but many lumps are harmless. Dr. K. Praveen Reddy examines every lump carefully and removes cysts, lipomas and other swellings when needed.
Common types of lumps
Sebaceous (skin) cysts, lipomas (fatty lumps), abscesses and swollen glands are among the most common swellings. A lump that grows, becomes painful, changes colour or keeps coming back should always be examined.
See a doctor if the lump
- Is growing, hard or fixed in place
- Is painful, red or discharging pus
- Appeared suddenly or after an injury
- Is in the breast, neck, armpit or groin
- Keeps returning after earlier treatment
Assessment and removal
We examine the lump and, if needed, advise an ultrasound or other test. Many lumps can be removed as a short procedure under local anaesthesia. Tissue may be sent for testing when appropriate.
- Clinical examination and ultrasound
- Minor surgery for cysts and lipomas
- Drainage of abscesses
- Tests on removed tissue if required
Recovery and aftercare
Most people go home the same day and resume routine activities soon, with wound care instructions. Stitches are removed after the advised days.
Frequently asked questions
Is every lump cancer?
No. Most skin lumps are harmless, but only an examination can tell. Never ignore a new lump.
Will a cyst come back?
If the whole cyst wall is removed it is unlikely to return, but this depends on the lump.
Is the procedure painful?
Local anaesthesia numbs the area, so you should feel pressure but little pain.
