Ligament injuries of the knee include ACL (anterior cruciate ligament), PCL (posterior cruciate ligament) and meniscal tears. Dr. Y. Srinivas Rao assesses these bone and joint injuries and treats them with physiotherapy or arthroscopy (keyhole surgery using a camera inside the joint).
Twisting injuries to the knee and shoulder can damage ligaments and cartilage. Dr. Y. Srinivas Rao assesses the injury and, when surgery is needed, uses arthroscopy (keyhole joint surgery) with small cuts.
What is arthroscopy?
Arthroscopy uses a thin camera and small instruments inserted through tiny cuts to see inside a joint. It is used to diagnose and treat problems such as meniscus tears, ligament injuries and loose fragments.
Symptoms of a ligament or cartilage injury
- Pop sound followed by swelling at the time of injury
- Knee giving way or feeling unstable
- Locking or catching in the joint
- Pain on twisting, squatting or pivoting
- Shoulder pain or weakness after injury
Assessment and treatment
We examine the joint and usually arrange an MRI. Many injuries heal with rest, bracing and physiotherapy. If instability or a torn meniscus persists, arthroscopic repair or reconstruction may be advised.
- Clinical tests and MRI
- Non-surgical care where suitable
- Arthroscopic surgery for selected injuries
- Structured rehabilitation
Recovery and aftercare
Rehabilitation is as important as surgery. Physiotherapy builds strength and movement, and return to sport is guided step by step by your surgeon.
Frequently asked questions
Is arthroscopy major surgery?
It is done through small cuts, usually with a shorter hospital stay, though recovery still needs time and physiotherapy.
Do all ligament tears need surgery?
No. It depends on the ligament, instability, age and activity level.
When can I play sport again?
Often after several months of rehabilitation; your surgeon will advise.
