Fracture First Aid and Sports Injury Care (RICE)

Arm in a sling, fracture first aid

After a fall or accident

  • Do not move the injured limb; support it as you found it
  • Control bleeding with firm pressure using a clean cloth
  • Do not try to straighten a bent bone or massage it
  • Go to a doctor at once

Sprain or sports injury: remember RICE

Rest, Ice for 15 to 20 minutes, Compression with a bandage, and Elevation. Do not massage a fresh injury.

See an orthopaedic doctor the same day if

  • You cannot bear weight
  • The joint looks deformed or swelling is severe
  • There is numbness or tingling

First aid for a suspected fracture

  • Keep the injured limb still and support it in the position found
  • Do not try to straighten or push a bone back in
  • Control bleeding by pressing a clean cloth over the wound
  • Apply a cold pack wrapped in cloth to reduce swelling
  • Do not give food or drink if surgery may be needed, and get to a hospital promptly

RICE for sprains and strains

For minor sprains remember RICE: Rest, Ice for 15 to 20 minutes at a time, Compression with a bandage, and Elevation above heart level. Avoid massaging a fresh injury, and avoid heat in the first two days.

Signs you need urgent care

Go to a doctor the same day if you cannot bear weight, the joint looks deformed, swelling is severe, there is numbness, or the skin is broken near the injury. Persistent pain after a week should also be examined, because some fractures are not obvious at first.

Treatment and recovery

An X-ray shows the fracture. Many are treated with a cast or splint; others need surgery with plates, rods or screws. Physiotherapy helps restore movement and strength. Orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Y. Srinivas Rao treats fractures and sports injuries at Swastha Clinic, Vanasthalipuram.

First aid for a suspected fracture

  • Stop activity and keep the injured part still
  • Support it with a splint or folded cloth; do not try to straighten a deformed limb
  • Apply a cold pack wrapped in cloth, never directly on skin
  • Do not give food or drink if surgery may be needed, and go to the clinic quickly

Sprain or fracture?

Both cause pain and swelling. Inability to bear weight, a visible deformity, or pain over the bone suggests a fracture. An X-ray settles the question. Ligament and tendon injuries may need an MRI.

Getting back to sport safely

Return only when swelling has settled, movement is full and strength is nearly equal to the other side. Warm up properly, wear suitable shoes and build up gradually. Dr. Y. Srinivas Rao treats fractures, sports injuries and other bone and joint problems.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if it is a fracture or a sprain?

Only an examination and X-ray can tell. Severe pain, swelling or deformity needs checking.

This is general information and does not replace an examination. Consult Dr. Y. Srinivas Rao at Swastha Multispeciality Clinic, Vaidehi Nagar, Vanasthalipuram.
